Unknown voice : If you want your money your going to have to do this soon Lyle.

Detective spinner : Hello Chief.

Chief : This case has taken you far too long, and is costing me far too much.

Detective spinner : Yes I understand that sir, but I'm going to get him, I know he's going to slip up soon!

Chief : You've got two weeks.

Detective spinner : Thank-you Chief, you won't regret this. (Hangs up) (slight smile)

Scene 1 : planning and analysis

The first actual footage that we filmed as a group was our first scene on the storyboard, this involved Jack ( Lyle ) sat in a dark room, smoking a cigarette and having an intense conversation on the phone.   As this scene was filmed in a dark room, we had to think of way of lighting the characters face without having the main light of the room turned on.

The method that we used to keep Jack's ( Lyle ) face able to be seen, whilst filming in the dark room was that we decided to place a laptop with the scene brightness turned all the way up, underneath his face. This enabled the camera to pick up his face, whilst leaving parts of it deeply shadowed. By doing this it helped us to portray Lyle in the way we wanted; an agitated character, as well as mysterious.

Script version 1 (Analysis)

We decided as a group that Maja was going to be in charge of creating a script. She did this well, and we were happy with the result of our first script. However when we were in the process of filming the first scene of  our sequence we realised that we actually wanted out character ( Lyle) to have more time on the screen. As a result of this decision we told Jack ( Lyle ) what we wanted him to say in the moment and then came back to alter the script and come up with a second draft the following day.

audience research

As me and my group are making a crime/thriller film, we are trying to decide on a target audience. To do this we are going to try and look at target audiences of similar genre films, the reason why we felt that this would be a good place to start is because people that have been targeted for films under the same genre as our film, would mean that the audience may very well be interested in viewing our film.


TAKEN - I think that the target audience for the film taken would be people over the age of 16, the reason why i think that the target audience would be over the age of 16 is because the film has quite a complex story line. I think that the target audience would want to see many scenes that involve car chases and violence, such as a shootout or fist fight between the protagonist and the antagonist.


SPECTRE - I think that the target audience for the Spectre would have a similar type of target audience to taken, the reason being is because they are under the same genre of film. The character James Bond is very popular with men aged 16-30, I think that this is because the story line is slightly more complex than other thriller films. The film also contains many scenes of dialogue, which uses more complex dialogue which may be why older people are targeted. However James bond is also very popular with slightly older women that fit in to the age bracket of 30-50. I think the target audience would also like to see many thrilling scenes, such as car chases, shootouts and fights.


FAST AND FURIOUS 7 - I think that the target audience for the film Fast and furious 7 would also have a similar target audience, as they would require the same sort of scenes to be present in the film. However i think that the target audience would start from a slightly younger age, such as 12-14, however i think that the target audience age would go as far as above 40. The reason why i think this is because the film fast and furious film has a much less complex story line, and because the film is based mainly on scenes that involve lots of car chases and violence.


MY FILM - For my film the target audience will be younger people aged roughly 16-20, the reason why I think this would be a good target audience is because that this seems to be the age range that is roughly focused on with films under the same genre as ours. I will aim to portray the opening of our film in the light of a film which beholds lots of violence and fights, as these are key common media concepts found in thriller films, and would help to attract a suitable audience.

Mise en Scene planning

Scene 1 - character Lyle ( played by jack ), Sat in a dark room. Wearing a dark black t-shirt , black jeans. also because the room will be quite dark, we will also have a light placed underneath actor, so that the camera is able to see his face nice and clearly.

Scene 2 - character Rose ( played by Maja ), walking down a dark alley. Wearing a pair of black leggings, and a fury jacket. Also again because the alley way will be quite dark we will also again have a light placed underneath the actor so they can be seen by the camera. During this scene Lyle is also present, where he is sat in the car - wearing black t shirt, and black jeans again.

Scene 3 - character Rose ( played by Maja ), opening front door. Walking in to the dining room and sitting down at the table with her parents. Rose will be wearing a pair of black leggings and a fury jacket. Rose's Dad ( played by Maja's Dad ) will be wearing a nice smart suit, and an expensive watch.

Scene 4 - character Detective spinner ( Played by Zac ), walking down a busy high road on the phone to his chief arguing about the case that he wants to be on. Detective spinner will be wearing a pairing of jeans, a grey hoodie and a bomber jacket, as well as having his police ID on show.

We have altered the script because we felt that when the actor spoke the lines, it did not sound realistic so we have changed it to sound more flowing.

Detective Spinner: (on the phone) I don't care if I've been working on this case for years, I will catch him no matter what, even if it's on my own accord. 

Institutional research

In our group we are going to be producing a short opening of a film, our film is going to be under the genre of a crime thriller. As we are A level students, with a limited amount of knowledge and experience of film making we are not expecting our sequence to be taking the interests of a very big distribution company. To add to this as our film is an English film, which means that it is a lot less likely that a American distribution company would be interested in our product as it would not be as appealing or relevant to their audiences.



FILM 4



- The first media institution that I looked was 'FILM 4' which is a British digital television channel which is available in the United Kingdom and is owned and operated by the well known company; 'Channel 4 television cooperation'. This channel provides films in standard definition for viewers free of charge, which is why i think that this distribution company would be a company interested in distributing our film. As film 4 is a company that doesn't request its viewers to pay additional costs to view its films, i think that it would be a good accompany to try and interest in our film because the company will have quite a large amount of viewers, which would help to publicise our product. Another reason why i think that this company would be interested in our film is because they have distributed films under the same genre previously, which leads me to think that they have already planned and targeted a specific audience for the same genre as our film, which means that our film may be suitable for their targeted audience.
An example of a film under the same genre as ours that film 4 have distributed is the film; Broken City, which is also a crime thriller.
       





                                                                                                   VERTIGO FILMS


Another distribution company that I looked at, which could be a possible company that would be interested in distributing our film, is the company; VERTIGO FILMS. Vertigo films are a British film distribution company, which is one of the reasons why I thought they would be another possible distribution company, as our film is a British film which means it would appeal to their audiences. Furthermore, Vertigo films isn't a substantially big distribution company, which means that it would be more interested in films that have been made under a low budget, and therefore having a low budget distribution deal as well, which is something that me and my group would be looking to organise. To add to this Vertigo films has also distributed films under the same genre previously, which means that this company would already have an audience that are interested in thriller films. An example of a film under the thriller genre would be the film 'THE SWEENEY', which was released in 2012 by Vertigo films.

                                                                    ICON FILMS

An additional distribution company that I looked at, which could be a possible company willing to organise a deal and distribute our product is the company; 'ICON FILM DISTRIBUTION'. This company is another British distribution company, an is often confused or mistaken for the American distribution company called; 'ICON PRODUCTIONS'. This company produce factual programmes for broadcast by network in the United Kingdom and in America, which is the reason why this company wouldn't be a suitable company to try and organise a distribution deal, as our product would not be appealing to their audiences.

CONCLUSION TO INSTITUTIONAL RESEARCH: As the ICON FILMS company would not have a suitable audience for our product to appeal to, I have come to the conclusion that me and my group should be trying to organise some type of distribution deal with a company similar to the VERTIGO FILMS and FILM4. The reason why is because they have a suitable audience, and have released similar films under the same genre, to add to this FILM4 are a slightly larger company which could make it harder to form a deal with as they would be looking for higher budget films. So I think that VERTIGO FILMS would be an preferable company to organise a deal with as it has a suitable audience and is a relatively small company that would be looking for a low budget cost film; like our film.

Feedback of first viewer

I showed our film to a member of the target audience after the first footage we have recorded. He said that he was pleased with the quick cuts that we had used and that they helped to build tension, he also said that the match cuts were well timed.

Synopsis

Eighteen year old Rose Pierce is part of a very successful family due to her Fathers wealthy, growing business. Rose has ambitions of her own as she part of a Ballet school, where she is one of the top students. Rose goes missing and her Father receives a call; Rose has been kidnapped...
Rose's disappearance fits a reoccurring pattern in the disappearance of young girls who are horrifically tortured and photos sent to the family.

Detective Spinner spots a familiar method from the protagonist with the same mystery man he's been chasing for decades without success.

Spinners on the hunt, whilst Rose's life is in danger, and her family grow increasingly worried.

We have decided that we are interested in the idea of a crime-thriller film, we have come up with the idea of a girl being kidnapped due to people targeting her family and their wealth. Furthermore we are interested in the idea because we thought that the storyline would cause a very gripping sequence. One idea that i would like to include are quick cuts between the victim of the kidnapping, and the person who kidnapped her. I would like to include this idea because because It will create suspense for the audience as they begin to feel sorry for the kidnapped character and proceed to worry about what is going to happen to her.





The film TAKEN is a a thriller/crime genre film, and has been an inspiration for me to help to construct a storyline for my film opening. The reason why i looked at this film is because it is under the same genre that me and my group are interested in as well as a similar storyline. I have noticed that within the film there are many action scenes, that we would not be able to create. However there is also lots of use of dialogue and other scenes that we would be able to create given the facilities and equipment able to us.










The film SPECTRE is also under the thriller/crime genre, and has also been an inspiration as it is one of my favourite films. The reason why i found this film to be such an inspiration is because of the amount of action and thrilling moments in it. However this film also has lots of use of dialogue and communication between characters that wouldn't be hard to try and use similar things within my task. The use of dialogue helps to build tension and can sometimes by just what is needed in order to create a thrilling moment.

The film Fast and Furious 7 is also under the genre of a thriller/crime, and again has been a big inspiration to me as it again is one of my favourite films. This film however also has many scenes of action and thrilling moments, that would not be able to be re-made by our group. There are many scenes in which are filmed in moving fast cars, including stunts, which would be far to complex for us to try and make, however this film also uses many scenes with dialogue, which we could repeat and use as inspiration.

Introduction

Today we officially started working on our AS coursework, we started to look at different genres and even had help from the website of 'Plotgenerator'. We looked at Crime, horror, romance and fantasy on the website, however we haven't yet come to a final decision. I am working with Maja Turner on this project. We are baring in mind that we won't have the money to be able to create a massive box office film, however we are still going to work as hard as we can to produce something to the best that we can.
